10 Tips to Build Your Anime Outfits Looks
Have you ever wanted to look like an IRL anime character? All kawaii fashion enthusiasts have been there, so don’t worry if you don’t know where to start! I have 10 tips to help build your anime outfit look. They’re easy to follow and will definitely give your outfits a glow-up!
There are so many different anime options and aesthetics that can inspire you. Building your anime outfit look can get confusing! But the 10 tips that I’m sharing with you today are super easy to follow along and will show great results.
1. Inspiration
The first thing you should do is think of your favorite anime! What kind of aesthetic does it have? Finding inspiration in anime you love will help you a lot when choosing your anime outfit.
Choose your favorite anime and then try to narrow it down to your favorite character. This will make it easy to choose what pieces you need for your anime outfit because you can take inspiration from a specific character. Narrowing down your options will make outfit-picking and shopping much quicker and stress-free.
Once you’ve chosen your anime/anime character, you can easily make a Pinterest board or just save photos of that character for reference. Looking at inspiration pictures while shopping and trying on your outfit will save you a lot of time, and you’ll know whether it’s what you’re looking for or not.
2. Color scheme
Color schemes are one of the most important and easiest things to decide on when building an anime outfit! Choosing your color scheme beforehand will cut down on a lot of work and stress because you can narrow down your options very quickly.
After finding inspiration, it’s a good idea to figure out what kind of color scheme your favorite anime character wears. If your favorite anime character wears a white top with a blue skirt, it’s really helpful to follow that color scheme. When you’re shopping, you can choose any white top you like, and any blue bottoms you like!
This makes shopping quick and it keeps your outfits feeling anime-inspired with a touch of your own style too.
3. Clothing Style
You don’t have to wear the exact same clothes as your favorite anime character (unless you want to, that’s awesome too). If you just love the personality/design/color scheme of a certain character, it’s easy to take those things and turn them into your own personal style.
Clothing style is subjective to you! If you want to look like Rem or Ram from Re: Zero, you don’t have to go all out with a maid costume if you don’t want to. What you can do instead is wear clothing inspired by them, or following a blue/red color scheme. You can also pair a simple black dress with red/blue accents to make an anime outfit inspired by them!
It’s easy to still look like an anime character and have an anime outfit even if you switch out certain pieces to suit your style more. If you adore a character that wears a dress, but you don’t like wearing dresses, switch it out for a top and bottom with the same color scheme.
4. Make-up
Wearing make-up might not be for everyone, but if you do like experimenting with a little bit of eyeshadow and eyeliner, this is a great option. Doing your makeup like your favorite anime character can really elevate a look, even if the outfit is simple!
In order to do make-up like your favorite anime character, it’s important to pay attention to their facial features. Iconic characters such as Uraraka Ochako from My Hero Academia have very round faces, so it’d be easy to apply lots of blush on the center of your cheeks. There are also lots of simple make-up tutorials on YouTube if you’re not confident in your skills.
5. The basics
Some people might not have a particular character they want to make an anime look from, and that’s perfectly fine! Making an outfit that still fits into the anime aesthetic is easy as long as you know what you look for.
Some “basics” or “staples” of an anime outfit are:
- Graphic tees (usually with anime art on it)
- Pleated/skater skirts (plaid is very popular)
- Long stockings
If you can’t think of a character to base your outfit on, I would try browsing some of these basics and building your own outfit! All of these pieces are a must-have in any anime/ kawaii fashion addict’s closet!
6. Accessorize
Anime outfits aren’t only about the top/bottom! If you have an anime outfit in mind, but you feel like it’s missing something, accessorizing will probably fix the problem!
No anime outfit is complete without an adorable bag or purse! Stuffed animal purses are iconic in kawaii/anime fashion. A statement piece like a stuffed animal bag is always a great option to elevate your anime outfit.
Other accessories you should consider adding are things like hair bows, bracelets, necklaces, gloves, long stockings, and of course chunky shoes! A lot of anime-inspired outfits include chunky platform shoes because they’re adorable and match the aesthetic perfectly.
7. Hairstyle
Changing your usual hairstyle can also make your anime outfit that much cuter! There are so many different anime-inspired hairstyles you can do, just go crazy and have fun!
Some of my personal favorites include Sailor Moon’s bun pigtails, high pigtails, and double French/Dutch braids! There are lots of easy tutorials all over the internet to help you learn how to make sure your hair is as cute as your anime outfit.
8. Organization
Another thing you should keep in mind is that there are usually multiple parts to an anime outfit, and it might be hard to keep track of them all.
To make sure nothing is missing from your outfit, it’s a good idea to make a table for complex outfits with many different pieces. Here’s an example:
Clothing piece | Already owned | Must-buy | Bust | Fits Weight(kg) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Blue plaid skirt | X | 64-92 | 40-60 | |
Blue plaid hair bow | X | |||
White blouse | X | |||
Long white stockings | X | |||
Black Mary Janes | X | |||
Cinnamoroll Stuffed Animal Bag | X |
9. Make sure you’re dressing for the occasion
Anime outfits are fun to wear all year, but when building your anime outfit look it’s important to keep the weather in mind! When it’s warm in the spring/summer, you should probably be looking for summer pieces such as skirts, shorts, and yukatas if you’re feeling creative!
If you plan on wearing your anime outfit in the fall or winter, it’s important you dress with warm pieces. This could include outfits with multiple layers (blouse + vest,+ jacket). If you plan on wearing stockings, it’s also a great idea to get nude fur-lined stockings. Looking cute while staying warm isn’t hard, but it’s definitely something you need to plan ahead.
10. Have fun!
This is the last but most important tip I have for you today! Wearing an anime outfit look is meant to be fun and cute, so make sure to choose whatever makes you feel most confident!
Whether it’s a dress, oversized graphic tee, pleated skirt, or whatever else you might like, just wear it with confidence and joy. This will make sure your anime outfit looks amazing!
Now that we know where to start and what to look for, building your anime outfit look is easy and most importantly, fun! Remember to utilize these tips as much as possible when shopping so you can stay cute and stress-free! Happy shopping!
